<strong>Artist Statement: </strong>
This works shows the DNA of the Artist being Aboriginal Chinese and White. This image is of his Chinese heritage. This year marks 202 years since the first Chinese migrant arrived in Australia back in 1818, yet the historical connections between Chinese and Indigenous people have largely gone unrecorded. What came to be known as the White Australia Policy saw a series of restrictive legislation passed at both a state and later a federal level early in the 1900’s. The climate of fear and distrust eased somewhat from the 1950s onwards, and today Chinese communities form a vibrant and important part of Australia’s character. Many Chinese families came to the Braidwood area in the late 1850s, heading to the gold fields around Jembaicumbene, Mongarlowe, Araluen and Majors Creek. This is where Lloyd’s Great Grandfather came to and met my Aboriginal Great Grandmother. The Chinese worked in the gold fields, but also as store keepers, market gardeners and in the transport industry. Charlie Ahoy Lloyd’s Great Grandfather came for gold and ended up working as a market gardener due to the persecution.
