The area has historical and mythological significance for the Aboriginal people. Merriman Island in Wallaga Lake is a sacred place for the Yuin people. In November 1977, it was the first place in New South Wales to be declared an Aboriginal Heritage site by the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service.
