Artist Statement:
The Yuin people of Two Fold Bay benefitted from the natural hunting strategies of the local killer whales. It was a Yuin belief that the orcas were re-incarnated spirits of tribal members. The orcas would regularly herd migrating baleen whales into the bay and the whales would strand themselves on the beach to escape the orcas. As a reward for doing this the Yuin tribe would give the orcas the lip and tongue of the stranded whales, keeping the rest for themselves. When the Yuin people wanted whales, they did a ritual and “call” the orcas to drive the whales to the shore.
