Whales sleep as standing up in the water by keeping their blowholes above the surface of the water so they can still breathe. They had the special layer of fat which is called blubber. It helps them to float without needing much energy. Sleeping this way also keeps them close to their family and friends making them feel safe in their surroundings. They can still use echolocation to communicate and sense their surroundings even while resting. The image was given to the artist by the diver photographing the whale asleep.
